Granular Pre-Emergent

Granular pre-emergent herbicides prevent weeds before they sprout, with options like 0-0-7 Safeguard for dormant lawns and 13-0-10 Guardian for weed control with added nutrients.

How Granular Pre-Emergent Works

Granular pre-emergent herbicides create an invisible barrier in the soil to prevent weeds from sprouting. Unlike post-emergent herbicides that kill existing weeds, pre-emergent herbicide granules stop weeds before they emerge. The granules must be watered in after application to activate the herbicide and form a protective layer in the soil. This layer prevents weed seeds from germinating while allowing desirable grass to thrive.

Applying a pre-emergent granular herbicide at the right time is essential. For the best results, apply before soil temperatures reach 55°F in the spring and again in the fall to prevent seasonal weed growth.  It's better to apply early than trying to apply right at the exact point of soil temperature.  Don't forget, it needs to be watered in for it to activate.

When to Apply Granular Pre-Emergent

For effective weed prevention, apply granular pre-emergent weed killer before weed seeds begin to germinate. Spring applications should be made before soil temperatures reach 55°F, while fall applications help control winter weeds. Regular use of granular pre-emergent weed control reduces the need for hand-pulling and post-emergent treatments, keeping your lawn healthy and weed-free year-round.

It's best to apply two applications of granular pre-emergent in the spring.  The first application should be applied before soil temperature reaches 55 degrees.  6-8 weeks after, another application should be applied to extend prevention into the summer months.
