Spring Lawn Fertilizer

Q: How do I fertilize my lawn in early spring?

In early spring, start with a pre-emergent fertilizer like 13-0-10 Guardian. This helps prevent weeds from sprouting while providing your grass with a boost of nitrogen. Apply it using a broadcast spreader at a rate of 4-5 lbs per 1,000 square feet, making sure to apply before soil temperatures hit 55°F.

Q: Should I fertilize my lawn in spring if I’m seeding?

If you’re seeding your lawn in spring, avoid using a pre-emergent fertilizer, as it can prevent grass seeds from germinating. Instead, use a balanced fertilizer like 15-20-10 Starter, 20-0-10 or 10-0-20, which will provide essential nutrients without hindering the growth of your new grass.

A product like Guardian 13-0-10 Pre-emergent is an ideal early spring fertilizer that prevents weeds like crabgrass from germinating. Apply this spring grass fertilizer before the soil temperature reaches 55°F, typically between January 15 and April 1, depending on your location. These fertilizers are perfect for promoting healthy growth in newly seeded lawns.
