TALL FESCUE
LAWN CARE PRODUCTS
february-may
Spring is a critical transition period for tall fescue as the lawn exits winter dormancy and prepares for summer stress. The primary focus is establishing a strong, healthy turf before heat arrives. This starts with applying pre-emergent to prevent crabgrass and other weeds before they germinate, followed by targeted weed control to clean up any existing broadleaf weeds. At the same time, steady fertilization is essential to promote root development, improve density, and build resilience. When done correctly, spring sets the foundation—thicker turf, fewer weeds, and a lawn better equipped to handle the challenges ahead.
Apply 2 Rounds of Pre-Emergent - 6 weeks apart
Guardian will prevent weeds and crabgrass from germinating in your lawn. Preventing weeds is much easier than eliminating them.
Apply 2 Rounds of Weed Killer
Apply Triad Select Weed Killer (as needed) on the entire lawn to clean up all broadleaf weeds.
Apply Mid May (6-weeks after Guardian)
Your lawn needs to be fed regularly. You will apply Emerald every 6 weeks to promote dark green color, strengthen grass, and protect against stress.
june-august
Summer is the most stressful season for tall fescue lawns, and the goal shifts from aggressive growth to protection and stress management. As temperatures climb, maintaining steady nutrition with the right fertilizer helps the lawn retain color, strengthen roots, and better tolerate heat, drought, and heavy foot traffic without pushing excessive growth. Summer is also the time to spot spray breakthrough weeds individually rather than applying broad blanket treatments that can further stress the turf in high heat. At the same time, preventative fungicide applications become critical, as warm nights, humidity, and moisture create ideal conditions for diseases like brown patch to spread quickly through tall fescue. A properly managed summer program keeps the lawn healthier, minimizes damage during peak stress, and positions the turf for a stronger recovery heading into fall.
Apply 2nd Round in July
Your lawn needs to be fed regularly. You applied the first round in May/June, and the second round should fall at the end of June or early July - 6 weeks from the first application.
september-october
Fall is the most important season for rebuilding and strengthening tall fescue lawns after the stress of summer. Cooler temperatures and increased moisture create the ideal environment for aerating and overseeding, allowing new grass to establish quickly and existing turf to thicken up before winter. Aeration relieves soil compaction and improves the flow of water, oxygen, and nutrients into the root zone, while overseeding helps fill in thin areas and bare spots caused by heat, disease, or traffic damage. Applying a quality starter fertilizer at the time of seeding provides the nutrients young seedlings need for fast establishment, deeper rooting, and long-term health. When done properly, fall seeding dramatically improves lawn density, color, and durability heading into the next growing season.
Overseed with Envy Premium Tall Fescue
Envy is built with turf-type elite varieties selected for better density, color, and overall performance.
Apply Starter Fertilizer with Grass Seed
Starter fertilizer is designed specifically for new seed or sod, with higher phosphorus to help roots develop quickly and absorb nutrients more efficiently.
November-December
Winter is an important maintenance period for tall fescue lawns and helps set the stage for a healthier lawn in spring. A late fall to early winter fertilizer application between November and December helps strengthen roots, improve winter color, and store nutrients for an earlier green-up next season. This is also an ideal time to control cool-season weeds before they mature and spread. In areas prone to Poa annua, applying ethofumesate during the winter months can help prevent this invasive grassy weed from establishing and taking over the lawn in spring. Proper winter care keeps tall fescue healthier, cleaner, and better prepared for the year ahead.

Everything you need to know before you start your Tall Fescue Program.
A well-maintained tall fescue lawn typically needs about 3 to 5 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per year. Most of that nitrogen should be applied in the fall, when tall fescue grows best. Too much nitrogen in summer can increase disease pressure and heat stress.
Yes, pre-emergent is important for preventing crabgrass, poa annua, and other weeds. For tall fescue lawns, pre-emergent is usually applied in early spring and again in fall. However, do not apply pre-emergent if you are planning to seed, because it can prevent new grass seed from germinating.
In most cases, you should not seed immediately after applying a standard pre-emergent. Pre-emergents are designed to stop seeds from growing, including grass seed. If you plan to overseed tall fescue, skip the fall pre-emergent and use a starter fertilizer instead.
The best time to seed tall fescue is in the fall, usually from late August through October, depending on your location. Fall seeding gives the grass cooler temperatures, better moisture, and less weed competition. Spring seeding can work, but fall is the preferred time for long-term success.
To keep tall fescue green during summer, focus on deep watering, proper mowing, and stress-support fertilizers. Mow tall fescue at 3.5 to 4 inches, water deeply and infrequently, and use fertilizers higher in potassium during hot weather. Avoid pushing too much top growth with heavy nitrogen in summer.
Tall fescue is a cool-season grass, so it naturally performs best in spring and fall. During summer, heat, drought, humidity, disease pressure, and shallow watering can cause thinning or browning. A good lawn care program helps prepare tall fescue before summer stress arrives and helps it recover quickly in the fall.
Granular weed killer is not as effective as liquid weed killer. We suggest spraying weed killer on the entire lawn early spring to kill off any hard to see weeds before the fertilizer kicks in.
It's best to apply granular products using a reputable spreader such as the Lesco Homeowner Spreader. The application will be much more even and percise. It is also much easier to use.
