What Does Safeguard Help Prevent?

Safeguard targets germinating weeds listed on the product label, including crabgrass, goosegrass, annual bluegrass (Poa annua), foxtail, and certain annual broadleaf weeds. It does not kill weeds that are already growing.

When Should I Apply It?

Spring: Apply before crabgrass germinates, generally before soil temperatures consistently approach 55°F. Fall: Apply ahead of fall-germinating annual weeds, including Poa annua. The right timing depends on your area and weather.

When should I apply Safeguard?

Apply before target weeds germinate. For spring crabgrass prevention, aim before soil temperatures consistently approach 55°F. For annual bluegrass and other fall-germinating weeds, apply before their fall germination window. Local conditions vary.

Which weeds does Safeguard prevent?

Label-listed weeds include crabgrass, annual bluegrass (Poa annua), foxtail, goosegrass, spurge and some other annual grassy and broadleaf weeds. It works on susceptible weeds as they germinate, not on established plants. Review the product label for the complete list.

Will it kill weeds that are already growing?

No. Safeguard is a pre-emergent, not a post-emergent weed killer. Treat existing weeds separately with an appropriately labeled product.

How much Safeguard should I apply?

Our typical guidance is 4–5 lb per 1,000 sq ft, but the correct rate and maximum annual amount depend on grass species and location. Follow the label's turf-specific rates and limits; do not exceed them.

Should I water after spreading Safeguard?

Yes. The label says best results come from at least 0.5 inch of rain or irrigation to activate the product before weed seed germination and within 14 days of application.

What's the difference between Safeguard 0-0-7 and Guardian 13-0-10?

Safeguard provides pre-emergent weed prevention with 7% potash and no nitrogen, making it useful when you do not want to push growth. Guardian adds nitrogen for feeding during active growth. Choose based on your lawn's seasonal nutrient needs.

Can I seed or overseed after using Safeguard?

Not right away. Prodiamine can prevent new grass seed from establishing. The label gives rate- and region-specific intervals; at common 4–5 lb/1,000 sq ft rates these can run roughly 4–6 months. Also, do not apply to newly overseeded turf until at least 60 days after seeding or the second mowing, whichever is longer. See the full label.

Which lawn types can use Safeguard?

The label includes established Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine, Centipede, tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass, among others. Rates and yearly limits differ by species. Do not apply to newly set sod until the following year.

When can people and pets return to the lawn?

Keep children and pets away during application, prevent contact with the granules, and follow all label precautions. Water in as directed and wait until the treated area has dried before normal lawn use.

Can I apply Safeguard twice in one year?

Sequential applications may be allowed, but only when their combined amount stays within the label's maximum annual rate for your turf species and local restrictions. Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass, for example, have lower annual maximums than Bermuda and tall fescue.

Q&A

I just over seeded my tall fescue/kbg lawn in NY first week of September. When will it be safe to use this pre emergent to help prevent poa annua this winter?: I would not recommend applying pre-emergent for at least 6-8 weeks after your seed has germinated. By that time, it may be to late to capture weed seeds before they germinate. I would encourage you to consider ethofumesate as a pre-emergent in the future to target Poa Annua.
I am wondering about the safety of your product for my small dogs that play in the backyard. How long do they need to stay off lawn after application? How long do I have to wait to let pets of family walk on lawn after application?: As soon as it is watered in it is safe to walk on.
Would I be able to spray this onto my lawn?: No this is a granular fertilizer so a spreader is required
I planted seed this fall. I’m looking for what I can use in the spring as a pre-immersion crab grass on new seedlings plus possibility of additional seed growingin the spring. Thanks: Our 13-0-10 Guardian pre-emergent fertilizer is ideal in spring with 2 applications. However you will not be able to seed until fall. If you do need to germinate more seed, do not apply any pre-emergent.
