Spring Grass Seed

Plan spring seeding the right way. Shop Envy and North Star — premium, 100% weed-free blends.

Spring is a great time to repair damaged turf, thicken your lawn, or start fresh with new grass seed. Whether you're recovering from winter damage or building a new lawn, our Spring Grass Seed blends are weed-free, professional-grade, and optimized for fast germination in cool-season regions.

When to Plant Grass Seed in Spring

The best time to seed in spring is when the soil temperature reaches 50–65°F. This typically occurs between March and May, depending on your region. Seeding too early may delay germination; seeding too late may invite weed competition. Use a soil thermometer or check local GDD data to time it properly.

How Much Grass Seed to Apply

  • Overseeding: 4–5 lbs per 1,000 sq ft
  • New Lawn Installation: 8–10 lbs per 1,000 sq ft

Apply evenly with a broadcast or drop spreader. For small areas, hand-spread and gently rake seed into the topsoil.

Do Not Use Pre-Emergent Weed Control If You’re Seeding

If you're planting grass seed in the spring, do not apply pre-emergent herbicides like prodiamine or dithiopyr. These products create a barrier in the soil that prevents all seeds from germinating—grass seed included. Wait at least 3-4 weeks after the new grass has germinated and been mowed 2–3 times before applying any weed control.

Prepare Your Lawn for Spring Seeding

To improve germination, prepare the area before seeding:

  1. Mow short and remove dead grass or debris.
  2. Loosen the soil with a rake, dethatcher, or aerator.
  3. Topdress with peat moss or wheat straw to retain moisture and protect the seed.

Without good seed-to-soil contact and topdressing, germination will be minimal.

Watering Grass Seed in Spring

New seed must stay consistently moist. Water 1–2 times per day with light applications until the seed germinates (typically 7–14 days). Once the grass is growing, reduce watering frequency and water deeper to encourage root growth.
