Benefits of Using Soil Conditioners

Soil conditioners are essential for maintaining a healthy lawn. They improve soil structure, enhance water retention, and provide essential nutrients. Our soil conditioners for lawns are specially formulated to address common soil issues and promote robust grass growth.

Types of Soil Conditioners

Soil conditioners improve the physical properties of soil, enhancing its structure, aeration, water retention, and nutrient availability. Here are some common types of soil conditioners for lawns:

Organic Soil Conditioners:

Compost:

    • Decomposed organic matter that improves soil structure, increases microbial activity, and adds nutrients.
    • Benefits: Enhances soil aeration, water retention, and fertility.
    • We recommend CarbonizPN

Manure:

    • Animal waste that provides organic matter and nutrients
    • Benefits: Improves soil texture, adds nutrients, and promotes microbial activity.

Peat Moss:

    • Partially decomposed sphagnum moss
    • Benefits: Increases soil water retention and aeration, reduces soil compaction.

Inorganic Soil Conditioners:

Sand:

    • Used to improve drainage in heavy clay soils and for leveling.
    • Benefits: Enhances soil aeration and drainage

Gypsum:

    • Calcium sulfate dihydrate.
    • Benefits: Breaks up compacted clay soils, improves water infiltration, adds calcium and sulfur to the soil if needed for correction.

Lime

    • Ground limestone (calcium carbonate) or dolomite (calcium magnesium carbonate).
    • Benefits: Raises soil pH (reduces acidity), adds calcium and magnesium into the soil.
    • Suggest PhastCal Lime as it is fast acting and contains Humic and Kelp.

Biochar:

    • Charcoal used as a soil amendment.
    • Benefits: Improves soil structure, enhances nutrient retention, supports beneficial microbial activity.  We recommend Carbon Pro G

Soil Conditioners for Lawns

Soil conditioners are perfect for lawns of all types. In order for a lawn to thrive, it must be planted in fertile soil that contains the correct pH, and needed nutrients.  Here are reasons to apply soil conditioner to your lawn:

High Soil pH

Soils that are alkaline and contain a pH over 7.0 should be reduced using a soil acidifier which will lower pH.  Acidifier contains elemental sulfur and should be applied at 10-15lbs. per 1,000 sqft.

Low Soil pH

Soils that are acidic and contain a pH under 6.0 should be increased using lime which increases pH.  PhastCal Lime will quickly increase pH and also add calcium to the soil.  Low pH will also increase hydrogen levels in the soil.  Excessive hydrogen in the soil causes damages to roots.  By increasing pH, hydrogen level also decreases.

Low Soil CEC

Soils with low CEC have a reduced ability to retain essential nutrients, which can affect plant growth and health.  By adding organic matter, incorporating humic, and biochar will increase CEC level in the soil resulting in increased nutrient utilization.

At Lawn Synergy, we offer a variety of soil conditioners to cater to different lawn care needs. From general soil amendments to specific products designed for particular soil problems, you'll find everything you need to maintain a healthy lawn.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to you decrease pH in the soil?

If your soil pH is too high for the type of plant your growing, it is then necessary to lower the pH using a soil acidifer. By applying 10-15 lbs. per 1,000 sqft, pH will lower by 1 point.

How to increase pH in the soil?

If your soil is too acidic, it may be necessary to increase pH by applying a fast acting calcitic lime. PhastCal will increase pH by 1 point when applied at 10 lbs. per 1,000 sqft. Once pH is corrected, monitor the soil using a soil test kit once per year. PhastCal applied at 5lbs. per 1,000 sqft will maintain pH in acid soil environments.

How do I increase cec level in the soil?

Soils with a low cec level will not hand off nutrients well to the plant. By increasing cec level, nutrient utilization improves. To increase cec level in the soil, start by applying a carbon product such as carbon pro g at the rate of 10lbs. per 1,000 sqft. If cec levels are very low, suggest multiple applications every 2-3 months until cec level is achieved. Once achieved, a maintenance application can be applied once or twice a year at the rate of 5lbs. per 1,000 sqft.

What is the best soil enhancer?

CarbonizPN is the best soil enhancer providing carbon and rich organic content. It can be applied as a topdressing or incorporated into the soil.

Featured Benefits

  • Reduces water needs
  • Aerates soils and reduces compaction
  • Reduces fertilizer and chemical inputs
  • Optimizes pH
  • Increases nutrient uptake (CEC)
  • Provides a permanent home for biology
  • Sustainable, natural, and safe

What is best to apply at time of seeding?

We recommend always performing a soil test before applying any soil conditioners. A soil test will provide cec level, pH, organic content, macro and minor nutrient levels.

  • Low CEC - Multiple applications of Carbon Pro G
  • Low pH - PhastCal Fast Acting Lime
  • High pH - Soil Acidifier
  • Low Organic Content: BioBoost 5-3-0
  • Low phosphorus: 0-46-0 phosphorus correction
  • Low potassium: 0-0-62 potassium correction
  • Low Calcium and Sulfur levels: Gypsum
