• Time-Saving: Reduces the time and effort spent on manual weed removal.

Types of Pre-emergent Herbicides

Granular Pre-emergents

Granular pre-emergent herbicides are easy to apply using a broadcast spreader. They are ideal for covering large areas uniformly and often include fertilizers to promote lawn health while preventing weeds. Granular options provide long-lasting protection, typically for up to 6 months.

• Guardian 13-0-10 Pre-emergent Fertilizer - Ideal for lawns that are just waking up or actively growing.
• Safeguard 0-0-7 Pre-emergent Fertilizer - Ideal for lawns that are still dormant or going dormant and do not need any nitrogen yet.

Liquid Pre-emergents

Liquid pre-emergent herbicides are applied using a sprayer and offer quick absorption into the soil. They are great for targeting specific areas or treating uneven terrain. Liquid pre-emergents are effective against a broad spectrum of weeds.

Best Time to Apply Pre-emergent Herbicides

• Early Spring: Apply pre-emergent herbicide when soil temperatures reach about 55°F (13°C) for several days. This is typically when forsythia blooms in many regions, signaling the right time to treat your lawn.
• Fall: Apply in late summer to early fall before the first frost. This helps prevent winter annuals and early spring weeds from germinating.

Do Not apply pre-emergent herbicides if you are going to install grass seed. Pre-emergents will also sterilize grass seed and it will not be able to germinate. Check the label for reseeding times.

How Does Pre-emergent Herbicide Work?

Pre-emergent herbicides are a proactive approach to weed control, designed to stop weed seeds from germinating and growing into mature plants. Here's how they work:

Mechanism of Action

Pre-emergent herbicides form a chemical barrier in the soil that targets the early stages of weed seed development. When weed seeds begin to germinate, they absorb the herbicide, which disrupts essential processes necessary for growth. This prevents the weed seeds from developing into seedlings and emerging above the soil surface.

Application Process

1. Timing: Apply pre-emergent herbicides before weed seeds germinate. This is typically in early spring and fall, based on soil temperatures and seasonal weed growth cycles.
2. Soil Integration: After applying the herbicide, it needs to be watered in to move the active ingredients into the soil where the weed seeds are located. This can be done through natural rainfall or manual watering.
3. Barrier Formation: Once integrated into the soil, the herbicide forms a protective barrier that affects weed seeds as they attempt to germinate.

Effectiveness

• Broad-spectrum Control: Pre-emergent herbicides are effective against a wide variety of annual grasses and broadleaf weeds, making them versatile for different lawn types.
• Preventive Measure: By preventing weeds from emerging, these herbicides reduce the need for post-emergent treatments and minimize the competition for nutrients, water, and sunlight that your grass would otherwise face.
