Seeing weeds in our lawn drives us crazy right? Especially when your neighbors lawn is weed free. And you just keep spraying and spraying but they keep coming back in different areas of the lawn. At this rate, they will never go away unless you prevent them in the first place.
Timing is everything when it comes to your lawn. By applying a pre-emergent herbicide early, before weeds begin to germinate, you can have a weed free lawn too!
Pre-emergents work by creating a barrier preventing weed seeds to germinate. If you apply it too late after weeds begin to germinate you will have weeds later in the year. We always recommend split applications of per-emergent making sure all areas of the lawn are covered.
Crabgrass is one of the weeds that shed its seeds later in summer but they don't germinate until the following spring. When soil temperatures reach 55-57 degrees for 5-7 consecutive days crabgrass germinates. Make sure your pre-emergent is applied 2-3 weeks before soil temperatures are ideal for crabgrass germination.
If your lawn is full of crabgrass this year, don't worry, we have a solution... But it is for next year. Once we have a frost, it will automatically kill the crabgrass. This fall, aerate and overseed your lawn heavy. Start now following our program and by this time next year, your lawn can be weed free.
Pre-emergent also prevents broadleaf weeds from germinating and lessens weed pressure on your lawn. If your looking for a weed free lawn this upcoming year simply follow our recommendation below for weed control.
January-February - Apply Pre-emergent
March-April - Apply Pre-emergent and apply broadleaf weed control to entire lawn
May-December - Spot spray any remaining weeds in lawn (if any)
We also recommend a full balanced fertilizer program to keep your lawn growing and healthy.
