Why Guardian
Why Guardian
Guardian 13-0-10 is a professional-grade pre-emergent fertilizer designed to do two jobs at once — prevent crabgrass and annual weeds while feeding your lawn for deep green, steady growth.
If you want a clean lawn without fighting weeds all summer, this is where you start.
What Guardian Prevents
- Crabgrass
- Goosegrass
- Poa annua (annual bluegrass)
- Spurge
- Chickweed
- Oxalis
- Other annual grassy and broadleaf weeds
Guardian contains .37% Prodiamine, creating a long-lasting soil barrier that prevents weed seeds from germinating.
Ideal For
- Tall Fescue
- Kentucky Bluegrass
- Bermuda
- Zoysia
- St. Augustine
- Centipede
*Do not apply if you plan to seed. Prodiamine prevents all seeds from germinating, including grass seed for up to 3-4 months.
How To Apply
How To Apply
Rate: Apply at 4–5 lbs per 1,000 square feet using a broadcast spreader.
Watering: Water in with ½ inch of irrigation or rainfall within 7 days to activate the pre-emergent barrier.
Application Timing
- Cool-Season Lawns: Apply February–April before soil temperatures reach 55°F. A second application 6 weeks later extends control and continues to feed lawn.
- Warm-Season Lawns: Apply February–April and again in September to prevent winter weeds.
Pre-emergent must be applied before soil temperatures reach 55°F for several consecutive days in spring to prevent crabgrass germination. Apply 1st application early!
Dormant lawn? If you do not want nitrogen, use Safeguard 0-0-7 Pre-Emergent instead.

FAQ
FAQ
When should I apply pre-emergent?
Pre-emergent herbicide is best applied before weeds germinate. For cool season lawns, pre-emergent herbicide should be applied before soil temperatures reach 55 degrees consecutively to prevent crabgrass and other weeds.
For warm season lawns, pre-emergent herbicide should be applied in the spring before soil temperatures reach 55 degrees and in the fall, typically in September for season long control
I applied pre-emergent too late. Now what?
Unfortunately pre-emergents must be applied before weeds germinate. It is very important to apply pre-emergent early before soil temperatures warm up or before coming into the season. You will see additional weed pressure during the growing months that will need to be attended to.
How long do I need to wait until I can seed?
We recommend waiting at least 3-4 months before seeding can take place. Spot seeding can be done if the soil is agitated and or replaced with new soil.
What makes this pre-emergent better?
50% XCU nitrogen will supply a continuous feed to your lawn, where most other fertilizers will leech through the soil faster and into the atmosphere before they can be used and not provide a consistent release of nutrients

When to Apply Guardian 13-0-10
Unlike generic pre-emergent that struggle to prevent crabgrass, our pre-emergent fertilizer works by creating a strong seed germination barrier on the soil. Exactly whats needed for a sod-quality lawn.
Application Schedule
Early Spring (Before soil temperature reaches 55 degrees)
The first application is critical. It needs to be applied early. Not when the soil reaches 55 degrees. Earlier is better as it will leave time for water in and the barrier to form.
Late Spring (Second Application)
A second application will extend crabgrass barrier protection further into the summer months. Guardian will also feed the lawn with needed nutrients during the spring.
Fall (If not seeding)
Applying Guardian early fall will prevent poa annua and other weed seeds from germinating. It also will prevent grass seed from germinating.
