Finally Grow Grass in Areas That Only Get 4–6 Hours of Sun.

If you’ve struggled to grow grass under trees or along the shaded side of your home, you’re not alone. Most standard lawn seed blends fail in low-light conditions.

This Shade Grass Seed Mix is specifically formulated to thrive in areas receiving 25–65% reduced sunlight while still performing well in sun-to-shade transition zones.

Why Shade Lawns Fail

  • Limited sunlight reduces photosynthesis
  • Tree roots compete for water and nutrients
  • Poor airflow increases disease pressure
  • Standard sun mixes lack fine fescue content

This blend addresses those issues directly.

What’s in the Mix — and Why It Works

  • Fine Fescues: The most shade-tolerant cool-season grasses available. They require less sunlight and less nitrogen than traditional turf types.
  • Perennial Ryegrass: Provides faster germination and early establishment.
  • Kentucky Bluegrass: Adds self-repair capability and improved wear tolerance over time.

The result is a darker green, finer-textured lawn that performs better in filtered light conditions.

Best Used For

  • Under mature trees
  • North-facing homes
  • Fenced yards with partial sun
  • Sun-to-shade transition areas

Minimum recommended sunlight: 4 hours per day.

Seeding Rates

New Lawn Installation:

Overseeding:

  • 4–6 lbs per 1,000 sq ft
  • Core aerate before overseeding for best results

Shade Lawn Success Tips

  • Mow higher (3.5–4 inches)
  • Reduce nitrogen compared to sunny lawns
  • Improve airflow by pruning trees if possible
  • Check pH to verify it is between 6-7
  • Water deeply but less frequently once established

Important: Do not apply pre-emergent before or after seeding. Products containing prodiamine will prevent germination.

Disappointing - old seed, meh cultivars

"Overall, I am pretty unhappy with this mix. I ordered in August 2025 and received seed with an 02/25 sell by date for my state. Even if the seeds were fresh, this is a pretty meh selection of cultivars. 29. 78% FENWAY is disappointing. There are much better creeping red fescues available in 2025. I am debating if this is still worth planting. Given the price, I expected a better blend."

Great Results!

"The Lasco Shade Grass Seed (Fescue) provided a pretty good yield merely by spreading the seed and lightly raking in the seeds. Used starter fertilizer. Kept the soil moist by watering everyday (we live in North Central Texas). The seed germinated in about a week-10 days. Lawn area is resident to some large shade trees which allow mottled sunlight to the lawn area. With proper care, the lawn should do well. I would purchase LASCO Shade Grass Seed again."

Good results in a week to ten days

"The shade tolerant fescue grass seed seems to have initial good results. The seed germinated in 7-10 days. It was watered daily and was assisted with an application of 15-20-10 Lawn Synergy starter fertilizer. I would estimate yield at about 75%. The grass has come up with a nice dark green color. This was planted in North Central Texas where summer heat can be an aggravating condition for many lawns. I wanted to utilize the shade tolerant seed and we will see how well this holds up with several large trees in the vicinity. So far, so good."

Grass within 8-10 days.

"Highly recommend. Easy to apply and grass growing quickly."

Q&A

Where is the product tag? What seed is in this mix? I’m assuming it is weed free as all you seed is.
Lesco seed will vary from batch to batch. This blend typically includes fine blade chewing fescues, ryegrass, and bluegrass. Lesco seed is blue tag certified and is 100% **** free.
I am using Lesco Shade mix for overseeding. I see that I should use 4-6 pounds per 1000 sq ft. However there are no spreader settings on the bag. I have a Scotts AccuGreen 1000 spreader. What spreader setting should I use? Or what is the Lesco setting so I can use the conversion table. Thank you
Here is our spreader setting guide for seed that you can use to reference. https://support.lawnsynergy.com/en-US/what-spreader-setting-should-i-use-for-my-scotts-spreader-when-applying-grass-seed-1325970
I have a new house that received centipede sod in SC. The centipede came out of dormant about 2 weeks ago. I live ion a shaded lot, 4-6 hours of sunlight. Is this the seed for me? Can I overseed the centipede with this or just use this in shaded areas and centipede the rest of lawn?
You should not need to overseed centipede grass as it will fill in on its own.
That grass seed is probably what I need however lots of trees around but I would say there’s more sun than shade. It’s probably 60-40 more sun
4-6 hours of sun is ideal. Sounds like this would be a great blend for your project.
I want to match my current seed which seed is it and what is the current price. Les o Shade seed mixture lot # M63-24-SHD14-1 item 20-02-250 I appreciate your help. Thanks Paul.
Hi Paul, If you can let me know the exact varieties in that lot, we can see if our current lot matches.
