Frequently Asked Questions

What makes LESCO Tall Fescue Select better than the LESCO Transition Blend?

LESCO Tall Fescue Select is positioned as the more premium option, with higher-quality turf-type tall fescue varieties selected for improved color, density, texture, and overall turf performance. The Transition Blend is a solid value option, while Tall Fescue Select is better suited for homeowners who want a more refined, professional-looking lawn.

What does Blue Tag Certified grass seed mean?

Blue Tag Certified seed has been independently inspected and verified for varietal identity, purity, and seed quality. The certification helps confirm that the seed in the bag matches the named varieties and meets established standards, giving you greater confidence in what you are planting.

Is LESCO Tall Fescue Select good for overseeding?

Yes. LESCO Tall Fescue Select is an excellent choice for overseeding thin, damaged, or aging tall fescue lawns. For the best results, mow low, remove excess debris, aerate or loosen compacted soil, spread the seed evenly, apply starter fertilizer, and keep the seedbed consistently moist during germination.

Can LESCO Tall Fescue Select be used for a new lawn?

es. It can be used to establish a new tall fescue lawn from bare soil. Proper soil preparation and good seed-to-soil contact are essential. Follow the application rate listed on the seed label, lightly rake the seed into the surface, and water frequently enough to prevent the soil from drying out.

How long does LESCO Tall Fescue Select take to germinate?

Tall fescue seed commonly begins germinating within approximately 7–14 days under favorable conditions. Germination can take longer when soil temperatures are too cool, the seedbed dries out, the seed is planted too deeply, or seed-to-soil contact is poor.

When is the best time to plant LESCO Tall Fescue Select?

Early fall is generally the best time to plant tall fescue because the soil is warm, air temperatures are cooler, and young grass has time to establish before summer heat. Early spring is another option, but spring-seeded lawns may require more irrigation and face greater weed and heat pressure.

Does LESCO Tall Fescue Select grow in shade?

Tall fescue can tolerate partial shade better than many common lawn grasses. It performs best where the lawn receives several hours of sunlight each day. Heavily shaded areas may require a specialized shade blend and improvements to sunlight, airflow, and soil conditions.

Is LESCO Tall Fescue Select worth the higher price?

For customers focused on seed certification, dependable varietal quality, improved turf appearance, and long-term performance, LESCO Tall Fescue Select is usually worth the additional cost. It is the stronger choice over the Transition Blend when lawn quality is the priority rather than the lowest upfront price.

Not as good as other brands

Q&A

Can I mix the starter with the seed to make spreading faster?
No, you should apply one at a time for a even application.
In the past I used lesco, a very pretty grass but I stop because it has nut grass (nutsedge) in it. Everybody i knew used it had the same problem, I wanted to know have this problem ben resolved.
I am unfamiliar with this issue. I would recommend treating nutsedge with a post emergent herbicide and monitoring moisture levels so as to not create favorable conditions for this ****.
How long before sprouts
7-10 days if installed and prepaired correctly
Does this grow in clumps l don’t like grass that grows in clumps
Tall fescue grows in clumps. However, when installed correctly, you will not see any clumps and enjoy a nice dense dark green lawn.
I live in dallas Texas and I want to know if this tall fescue grass is recommended to survive the heat and cold all year round,,, I had Bermuda grass but I have trees it does not survive and I would like you to recommend me one that is for the whole year and that is tolerant to little sun and shade
You can plant tall fescue but it is certainly going to struggle during the summer months in Texas. It may be better to enlarge the bed under the tree.
