Grass Seed Calculator FAQs
How do I calculate how much grass seed I need?
Measure your lawn area in square feet, divide by 1,000, and multiply by the seeding rate on your product label. For example, a 6,000 sq ft lawn at 5 lb per 1,000 sq ft needs 30 lb of seed.
What's the difference between overseeding and a new lawn?
Overseeding thickens an established lawn, while new-lawn seeding starts on bare soil. Because application rates differ, choose the project type before buying seed.
Why might the recommended combination include different bag sizes?
The calculator compares available bags to purchase enough seed at the lowest displayed subtotal. It shows the amount left over so you can compare combinations before adding them to your cart.
When is the best time to plant grass seed?
It depends on your grass type and location. Cool-season grasses generally establish best in fall or spring. Bermuda seed is generally planted when soil temperatures are reliably warm. Check your local conditions and the product label.
Calculations are planning estimates. Follow current product label instructions and local planting guidance. Product availability and prices may change before checkout.
