A Dirty Lawn Full of Weeds - Now what?

A beautiful lawn is the pride of any homeowner. However, maintaining a lawn that is free of weeds can be a daunting task. Weeds can take over your lawn, ruining its beauty and health. Fortunately, with the right techniques, it is possible to take a lawn with weeds and transform it into a perfect lawn. In this article, we will discuss how to achieve this using proper soil corrections, fertilizer, reseeding, and a great lawn care program from Lawn Synergy.

1. Soil Test

The first step in achieving a weed-free lawn is to assess the quality of the soil. Soil testing will help you determine the pH level, nutrient deficiencies, and soil texture. Once you have identified any issues with your soil, you can make the necessary corrections. You may need to add lime to adjust the pH level or add organic matter to improve the CEC level. The right soil corrections will ensure that your lawn has a healthy foundation, which is essential for weed control.

2. Fertilize your lawn

Fertilizing your lawn is essential to its health and growth. However, it is important to use the right type of fertilizer and apply it at the right time. In general, it is best to use a slow-release fertilizer that will provide a steady supply of nutrients over time and its much better for our environment. You should also fertilize your lawn on a schedule.  It's not just a one and done.  You will need to apply fertilizer before the previous application has run out.  A well-fertilized lawn is better able to compete with weeds, making it less likely that they will take hold.
3. Reseed in the fall

If your lawn has areas that are thin or bare, aeration and reseeding can help to fill in those spots and create a denser lawn that is more resistant to weeds. Fall is the best time to reseed because the soil is still warm, and there is less competition from weeds. You should choose a high-quality certified grass seed that is appropriate for your region and soil type. Be sure to prepare the soil properly before seeding, and keep the area well-watered until the grass has become established.

    4. Blanket Apply Weed Control

How to get rid of weeds in your lawn starts with applying a full application of weed control in the spring and fall is highly recommended.  For Cool season Lawns, a 3-way product such as Triad Select works great on weeds.  For warm season lawns, Celsius WG will also clean up any weeds.  Weeds may be very small at this time and a blanket application of weed control will stop and kill these weeds before they become a problem.

    5. Apply Pre-emergents

Pre-emergents work by creating a barrier on top of the soil preventing weed seeds from germinating.  You must apply pre-emergent before these seeds germinate for protection.  Pre-emergent applications should be included in your existing lawn care program.  LawnSynergy's lawn care program includes these pre-emergent application to ensure our customers have a weed free lawn going forward.

    5. Adopt a lawn care program

Finally, to maintain a weed-free lawn, it is important to adopt a lawn care program. This should include regular mowing, watering, and weed control. Mowing your lawn at the proper height will help to shade out weeds and encourage healthy growth. Watering your lawn deeply and infrequently will help to develop deep roots and make your lawn more resilient to drought and disease. Finally, using a weed preventative product from Lawn Synergy will prevent weeds from germinating and keep your lawn looking its best.

Certainly, in some cases, it may be better to start from scratch and completely reseed or install a new lawn. If your lawn has a severe weed infestation or is overrun with disease or pests, it may be difficult to revive it. In such cases, starting over may be the best option.

Killing off the entire lawn can be done using a non-selective herbicide, which will everything, including grass and weeds. This method can be effective, but it can also be time-consuming, and it may take several weeks to see the results. Once the lawn has been completely killed off, the area can be tilled, leveled, and prepared for seeding or sod installation.

Starting from scratch can be a significant investment of time and money, but it can also provide the opportunity to create a lawn that is tailored to your specific needs and preferences. You can choose the type of grass that will best suit your climate and soil type and install an irrigation system to ensure that your lawn is well-watered and healthy.
