How to Use the Spreader Settings Tool

  1. Choose Your Product: Select the product you're applying.

  2. Select Your Spreader Model: Options include rotary, and brand-specific models (e.g., Lesco, Earthway, Scotts).

  3. View Your Recommended Setting: Apply the product at 4–5 lbs per 1,000 sq ft, unless noted otherwise.

  4. Use Common Sense: Always divide your lawn into sections and portion your product to avoid running out or overapplying.  The recommended settings in the tool are approximate and a starting point only.

Tip: Always calibrate your spreader if you're unsure. Spreaders vary based on walking speed, spread width, and mechanical wear.

Understanding Spreader Settings

  • Rotary Spreader: Broadcasts product in a wide arc. Walk at a consistent pace and slightly overlap paths.

  • Drop Spreader: Drops product in a narrow strip. Ideal for precision around flower beds and walkways.  Not recommended for fertilizing your lawn.

  • Flow Rate: Measured in lbs per 1,000 sq ft. 5 lbs is the optimal target for most Lawn Synergy products.

  • Calibration: If you’ve never calibrated your spreader, consider doing a test pass with a known quantity.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What spreader setting should I use for my Scotts spreader when applying your fertilizer?
A: To determine the proper spreader setting for your Scotts spreader when applying our fertilizer, you need to know the amount of product you want to apply per 1,000 sqft. For most fertilizer applications, 4 -5 lbs. of product per 1,000 sqft is ideal. It's important to note that all spreaders might behave slightly differently, so it might be beneficial to start with a lower setting to prevent running out of product too early. Gradually increase the setting as needed to ensure even coverage.  Also, it is best to portion out the bag to areas of your lawn so that you can adjust on the fly.

Once you achieve the correct setting, write it down for future use.  Most of our lawn fertilizers will need to be applied at 4-5 lbs. per 1,000 sqft.  For a scotts spreader, between 4.5 - 5.5 setting.  You can check using our spreader settings page, for each product.

Q: How do I know my spreader setting is correct?
A: Divide the bag by the square footage to be covered. If you're halfway through the lawn, you should have used half the product.

Q: What is the best setting for grass seed?
A: For most grass seed blends, 4-5 lbs per 1,000 sq ft is sufficient for overseeding. Set your spreader on a lower setting and go over the area twice in opposite directions for even coverage.

Q: Are Lesco spreader settings different?
A: Yes, Lesco rotary spreaders generally use higher numbers (e.g., 15–16) than Scotts or Earthway. Refer to our chart or widget above.

Q: How often should I calibrate my spreader?
A: Every season, or when switching between granular products with different densities.

Q: Do spreader settings vary by product type?
A: Yes. Fertilizers, weed & feed, and grass seed all require different rates. Check the label or use the widget above.
